23 May 2010 - Let Me Hear Your Thoughts/Concerns

This week it's another Samuelson Sez "Shout Out". That gives me the opportunity to ask you to share your thoughts and concerns and then I'll share them with my readers in an upcoming column of Samuelson Sez.

The subject this week: "Your Concerns About Your Future in Agriculture". It's based on questions asked earlier this Spring, in the 18th annual Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Survey that is conducted among farmers and ranchers ranging in age from 18 to 35 years. I would like to take it beyond that age range, to any of you involved in production agriculture. This is the e-mail address where you can respond and share your thoughts… Orion@agbizweek.com.

  • Here are some of the questions asked in that survey and the Young Farmer and Rancher response:
  • How concerned are you about the impact of environmental and livestock activist groups on your business? 85% said they were concerned or very concerned.
  • How concerned are you about proposed government climate change regulations? 79% said concerned or very concerned.
  • What are your top three challenges in your farming or ranching operation? 24% said overall profitability; right behind, 23% said the challenge of government regulations; tied for 3rd, two responses at 9% each, competition from more established farms, and (hear this Mom and Dad) the willingness of parents to share management responsibilities.
  • What about commitment to agriculture? 96% said they feel they are lifelong farmers and ranchers. 98% said they would like to see their children follow in their footsteps.
  • Finally, Are you more optimistic than 5 years ago? 80% said YES, and 82% said they were better off.

So, how would you respond to these questions? I would like for you to share your thoughts with me at Orion@agbizweek.com. I appreciate responses to earlier "Shout Out's" and I look forward to hearing from you on this one.
