17 June 2018 - Fair Time, Favorite Time of the Year

With the advent of summer, we are coming to one of my favorite times of the year, County Fair and State Fair time. I know some of you have already had your Fair, yet during July, August and September there is a lot of activity at Fairgrounds all over the country.

I call County and State Fairs the Super Bowl and World Series for 4-H Club members and FFA members because after a year of work on their 4-H project or their SAE - Supervised Agricultural Experience, they now get to move into the County Fair or State Fair - into the show ring, the speaking competition, the displays of their project work to show what they have accomplished in the past year.

So let me suggest some thoughts I offer every year....County and State Fairs could not survive without volunteers, so if you have the time, get involved as a volunteer.

For livestock exhibitors, this is the most important rule of all. Know the rules and follow them!! Don’t even try to bend them!! This is a life lesson in honesty and sportsmanship for you, your parents, your 4-H leader and your FFA Advisor. I know the dollar amount at the State Fair or County Fair Championship auctions are important to you, but not important enough to break the rules.

Secondly, for those of you going to the Fairs, especially city folks who want to learn first-hand where and how their food originates, ask these young people honest questions and you will get honest answers. Please don’t try to get into an argument with them over animal rights issues because they lead animals into the show ring. They don’t mistreat animals. Visit with them and you will learn the care they provide their livestock projects.

Finally, go to the Fair, ride the Ferris Wheel & the Tilt-A-Whirl, eat a pork-chop sandwich and a corn dog, support the County and State Fair in your community.
